Bilbao travel guide

Bilbao, set on the Nervion River in the north of the Peninsula, is the largest city in the Basque Country. Mainly an industrial port and a working city, Bilbao didn’t hold any particular attractions for tourists before Architect Frank Gehry built the futuristic Guggenheim Museum dedicated to modern art. The Guggenheim Museum together with the Santiago Calatrava glass footbridge and the sleek subway system designed by Norman Foster have all helped to make the Basque Country commercial centre into an attractive cultural destination for modern art. Other interesting sites are the 14th century Gothic Church of Santiago, the Archaeology and Ethnology Museum and With the climate characterised by a constant drizzle contributing to the green landscape, and the rugged coastline, the Basque Country is a distinct national and cultural entity within Spain with even a language of its own called Euskera. The Basques have often been seen as collective-minded and practical people, characters that are in complete contrast with the traditionally individualistic and passionate Latin neighbours.
