When visiting Malaga you’ll be hit by its illustrious past evident on the historic centre and particularly around La Alcazaba, the early 11th century fortress set across a hill which used to be part of the shore line before the modern harbour. However Malaga is also a modern place dominated by Calle Larios which is the city’s commercial centre and the recommended starting point for sightseeing as it is surrounded by attractive small streets and piazzas, as well as the magnificent cathedral. Historically Malaga used to be the place where rich people would come to relax which has left a fantastic heritage of sophisticated gardens such as the impressive park on Calle Alameda dating back to the 19th century that today is recognised as being one of the most celebrated botanical collections in Europe. More gardens are found along the Paseo del Parque lined by shady palm trees, this large avenue that runs between the port and the old quarter of the city is popular with locals for sitting in the afternoon and watching the world go by.
Malaga's famous Cathedral, La Manquita lies just behind the Paseo del Parque. It took so long to build that it incorporates a mixture of styles including Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical.
For one of the best views over the city go to Gibralfaro, you can either venture the steep walk or take one of the buses that run from the town centre. Once at the summit you will have a superb vista of the City including the bullring (Malagueta), the Port and the beaches surrounding the city. The Moorish castle at the top is in better condition than the Alcazaba and more imposing. The gardens at the top are a perfect place to sit and take in the fantastic panoramic views.
