Maò, the capital of Menorca, is a beautiful historic port town with fascinating architecture. One of two urban centres on the island, Maò shares with Ciutadella, the other town, 70 per cent of the population. Maò is a very charming small city with an old centre, picturesque squares, cobblestone streets and a natural 5-km long harbour.  The port of Maò has been a strategic base for centuries, therefore the historic sights here are rather plentiful such as the remains of the Castle of Sant Felip, and the well conserved fort of La Mola, which was used as a military prison during the Franco dictatorship. Rei Island in the port was the spot where King Alfonso III disembarked. Here you'll discover the remains of an early Christian basilica, well worth a visit. Also of interest is the building known as Golden Farm, part of a group of houses located on the seacoast, where Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton apparently lodged. Maò also offers a number of restaurants, bars and a buzzy nightlife.
