The aspect of Minorca's coastline is very different from North to South, rugged and windy the first and lower and sandy the latter with a succession of coves and beaches particularly towards the end of the island. Caribbean-like with very fine sand and crystalline waters, Son Saura is one of Minorca’s finest beaches. A beautiful secluded spot with not even a bar to buy refreshments, Son Saura is easily accessible from Ciutadella. Another gem of the island is Cala Mitijana surrounded by pine trees that can be reached driving towards Ferreries via the town of Santa Caldana. Cala Macarella and Macarelleta South of Ciutadella, 500 m apart situated at the end of a pinewood, are a pair of extremely beautiful coves that can be reached by car from the outer ring road at Ciutadella, or by foot from Cala Galdana. The latter is a typical urban beach, beautiful nonetheless, with plenty of facilities including bars, restaurants, hotels and shops. The perfectly preserved Cala’n Turqueta is the symbol of the island ecologic spirit. This picturesque cove surrounded by shrubs and pines is split in two forming a natural pool delimited by low rocks. Son Bou, a stretch of sand 3 km long with shallow waters, is one of Minorca’s most famous beaches with good facilities including restaurants, bars and umbrellas for hire; behind the hotel there is even a shopping centre with many bars and restaurants. Finally the stretch of coastline at Cala Coves has many caves high up in the walls of the gorge, making the exploration of this area very exciting for children. The small beach can be reached by a short steep walk and has no facilities at all.
